Arcibiskupský zámek
Czechia
Long before you reach the square, the tower tells you where you are going. At 84 metres it is the landmark of the whole of Kroměříž, and buried within it is something older: a four-sided, prism-shaped defensive tower, the surviving piece of the castle the bishops of Olomouc once held here. The early Baroque palace that grew around it served those bishops and archbishops as their showpiece residence, and together with the Podzámecká and Květná gardens it was declared a national cultural monument in 1995 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The palace and its collections still belong to the Archdiocese of Olomouc.
