Bellušov vodojem
Slovakia
Come at it from the east side of Trnava and the tower announces itself well before you reach it. At 50 metres it is one of the town's landmarks, and it is unmistakably a water tower: a solid drum of a tank lifted high on a ring of legs. The design is by Emil Belluš, the architect whose name the place now carries, and it dates from 1941. The structural calculations were the work of Professor Karel Havelka. Construction ran from 1942 to 1946, yet the tower was only handed over for operation in 1954. The source gives no reason for that gap of several years between finishing the building and putting it to work, so it is worth holding as an open question rather than filling it with a guess.
