Bertramka
Czechia
Bertramka sits on the northern slope of Černý vrch in Prague's Smíchov district, at the end of Mozartova street, and its story begins not with music but with wine. Until the 17th century this hillside was planted with vineyards dotted with small wooden vineyard houses. In 1699 a brewer, Jan František Pimskorn, bought up and joined several of those plots, then built a homestead from quarried opuka stone: a small dwelling, a wine press and a barn, with the whole ground walled in. The building is usually described as classicist and dating from the middle of the 18th century, so the house you see is better read as a series of reworkings on that earlier farm than as one moment frozen in stone.
