Brigetio Castrum

Slovakia

Brigetio lies in Szőny, now part of the town of Komárom, on the right bank of the Danube. Stand here and you are on the old limes road, the frontier highway that linked Vindobona with Aquincum. Your nearest Roman neighbours were small forts holding auxiliary troops: Ad Mures to the west, on the ground of today's Ács, and Azaum to the east, beyond modern Almásfüzitő. Even the name is older than Rome. It is Celtic, its root brig related to the German Berg, meaning mountain, and the Old Church Slavonic breg, a bank or hillside. Before the conquest this was a settlement of the Celtic Azalus tribe.
