Brigetio Kohors castrum
Slovakia
You are standing in Szőny, a district of Komárom, on the right bank of the Danube, and the river is the reason anything was ever built here. Brigetio was one of the significant military camps and civilian towns of the Roman province of Pannonia, set on the frontier road, the limes, that linked Vindobona with Aquincum. Its name is older than Rome. It is Celtic, built on the root brig, a cousin of the German Berg (hill) and the Old Church Slavonic breg (bank, slope). Before the legions came, this was a settlement of the Celtic Azali tribe.
