Brno Ossuary

Kostnice u sv. Jakuba

Up to 50,000 people beneath the square — Europe's second largest ossuary.

The ossuary at St James lies under Jakubské náměstí, for the most part directly beneath the church itself, and by the number of remains it holds it is the second largest in Europe after the Paris catacombs. A cemetery stood here, and when it ran out of capacity the ossuary was created beneath it; remains were also moved here from the abolished cemetery at Petrov. When the graveyard was closed at the end of the 18th century the ossuary was sealed and then forgotten entirely. It was rediscovered in 2001 during an archaeological survey of the square, and opened to the public in June 2012.
