Burg Güssing
Austria
Before you think about any of the people who held it, look at what the castle stands on. Burg Güssing sits on a cone of tuff that rises about 100 metres, steep on every side, straight out of the flat country in the middle of town. The hill, now called the Schloßberg, reaches roughly 318 metres above the Adriatic. It is the throat of a long-dead volcano, probably a maar, whose rock formed some five to six million years ago. Erosion has stripped away several hundred metres of what once stood above it, leaving only this hard plug. On top is the oldest castle still standing in Burgenland.
