Burg Klammstein
Austria
You see it before you reach it: a tower on a rock at the mouth of the Gastein valley, about 60 metres above the Gasteiner Straße. Burg Klammstein, in the municipality of Dorfgastein, is counted as the oldest building in Gastein. Today the road no longer squeezes past the foot of the crag. It runs straight through it, in a tunnel built between 1960 and 1962. What stands above you now is a ruin that has been partly rebuilt, so read it as two things at once: a medieval fragment, and a modern effort to give that fragment back some of its shape.
