Burg Kreuzen
Austria
You reach Burg Kreuzen along a wooded ridge that falls away steeply on three sides, just outside the spa town of Bad Kreuzen in the Perg district of Upper Austria. It is a rock castle, and by extent it is usually counted the second-largest castle complex in the province, outdone only by the ruin of Schaunberg. At the gate you can still see the height the curtain wall once reached, five metres. Tradition holds that a fortress stood here around the year 900 as a refuge for people fleeing danger, though the source frames that as something the castle is said to have been, not something proven. The name has a legend too: a pilgrim staying here supposedly brought back a fragment of Christ's cross from the Holy Land.
