Burg Oberranna
Austria
Burg Oberranna sits on the border between the Wachau and the Waldviertel, above the village of Oberranna in the municipality of Mühldorf, and the first thing to grasp is that the castle is not the main event. Its oddity is the pairing of a fortified church with a much smaller castle. When the complex was built, the church stood in front of the castle and took over its defence entirely. The whole site was meant to watch over the Griesteig, the route running from Hinterhaus to Fohraberg, and as its fortifications grew in unsettled times, the castle was never taken. Note also that it has been privately owned by the Colloredo-Mansfeld family since August 2021, so expect to see it from outside rather than walk its rooms.
