Burg Rastenberg
Austria
Burg Rastenberg is not a broad fortress. It is long and narrow, about 19 by 54 metres, laid out along the very tip of a granite spur in the municipality of Rastenfeld, in the Krems district of Lower Austria. You move through it in sequence rather than taking it in all at once: a forecourt first, then two small inner courtyards. Above everything rises the keep, the Bergfried, which is five-sided and 27 metres high. That pentagonal tower is what gives the castle its silhouette.
