Burg Sommeregg

Austria

Burg Sommeregg sits on one of the rounded hilltops typical of the Millstätter Berge, above the hamlet of Schloßau near Treffling in Seeboden am Millstätter See. When you stand on it, the obvious question is how old it is, and the honest answer is that nobody is quite sure. For a long time 1237 was given as the first written mention, although the source for that date is unknown. Today the castle is thought to have existed by around 1187, when a Witemarus von Sommeregg appears in a document from the South Tyrolean monastery of Neustift. Older still is a hint from the ground itself: a Bronze Age axe found near Treffling suggests the hill may have served as a refuge some four thousand years ago.
