Burg Strechau
Austria
You enter Burg Strechau through a gate cut into what was once a bastion. Look up and there is a defensive oriel jutting out above the gateway. Beside it, three oval openings in the masonry mark where cannon once stood. Then look higher, to the shingle roof and its three weathervanes. One of them is a witch riding a broomstick. It is a fitting welcome to the second-largest castle in Styria, which sits on its hill in the Burgfried part of Lassing. Oddly, it shares its name with Strechau, a district of neighbouring Rottenmann, and nobody knows whether the castle was named after the place or the other way round.
