Burg Thalberg
Austria
Burg Thalberg stands above the River Lafnitz, in the municipality of Dechantskirchen in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district of Styria, and it carries a weighty reputation: an outstanding example of high-medieval castle building, and probably the best-preserved Romanesque fortification in the province. That 'probably' is the source's own hedge, and it is worth keeping. What you see first is the upper castle, a long, narrow complex 90 metres by 23, with a massive square tower planted at each of its short ends. Most of the surviving Romanesque fabric is up here.
