Burg Trautson
Austria
Look up from the Wipptal near Matrei am Brenner and the rock above the Sill still tells you why someone built here. Burg Trautson, also called the hintere Veste Matrei or Schloss Matrei am Brenner, was the last of three castles that once watched over this valley, alongside Raspenbühel and Vogelbühel. In its complete form it was a long, narrow fortress, about 90 by 20 metres, strung out along the rock. What you see today is far less than that. Most of the castle was destroyed in a single day, and the story of how it got there runs from a count's quarrel to a wartime bombing raid.
