Burgruine Alt-Ems
Austria
Look up from the market in Hohenems and the rock simply rises, a sheer ridge known as the Schlossberg. The ruin of Alt-Ems sits on top at 740 metres above sea level, roughly 300 metres above the floor of the Vorarlberg Rhine valley. The name explains the position. Alt-Ems, sometimes written Alt-Embs, comes from Alta-Embs, from the Latin altus, high, so it means something like 'High Ems'. The town below takes its own name, Hohenems, from the castle, not the other way round.
