Burgruine Klamm

Austria

Burgruine Klamm stands in the hamlet of Klamm, part of the municipality of Breitenstein in the Neunkirchen district of Lower Austria. It is a hilltop castle, and its layout reads like a timeline set in stone. The tower and the palas, the residential hall, occupy the very highest point of a cone-shaped hill. Everything else came later: successive extensions spread downhill, step by step, until they closed into a ring of defences around the summit. In the middle stands a chapel, free-standing rather than built into the walls. Before you go, know this: the ruin is listed as a protected monument but is privately owned and not open to the public, so this is a place to look at from outside, not to wander through.
