Burgruine Kropfsberg
Austria
From the floor of the Inn valley above St. Gertraudi, in the municipality of Reith im Alpbachtal, you pick out Kropfsberg by its towers before anything else. There are three of them, almost the same height, and that silhouette is unique in Tyrol. The ruin sits on a raised ridge of hill where the Zillertal opens into the Inntal, and it is a listed monument. That position at the valley mouth is the whole reason it exists. The Archbishops of Salzburg held wide stretches of the Zillertal, and under Archbishop Konrad I, in the first half of the twelfth century, they built the first castle here to watch the way in.
