Burgruine Plainburg

Austria

The Plainburg sits above the Gmain valley at up to 643 metres, about 1.5 kilometres by road from the centre of Großgmain in the province of Salzburg. Locals also call it the Salzbüchsl, the little salt box, and it counts among the oldest castle ruins in Austria. From up here you look across to Großgmain and to Bayerisch Gmain beyond. The view is the reason most people make the climb, and the ruin has long been a popular outing, with a viewing platform that was due to be renovated in 2024. There is a catch worth knowing before you set out: the source also states that the ruin itself is closed all year round. Check the current situation locally rather than counting on wandering inside.
