Bývalé Humanistické gymnázium
Slovakia
Stand at the northern edge of Radničné námestie, Bardejov's town hall square, and the building that closes the view is the old municipal humanist school. It went up around 1538 beside the town wall, near the eastern end of the parish Church of St Giles, possibly on the site of an earlier parish church school. The evidence is written on the building itself: the inscription ERECTA ANNO 1538, under the roof on the main façade, came to light only during restoration. Bardejov had a school even before the fifteenth century, but nobody knows where it stood or what it looked like, so this is the oldest schoolhouse you can actually see.
