Čachtický hrad
Slovakia
Čachtice sits on a limestone and dolomite hill, 375 metres above sea level, in the Čachtice Karst at the edge of the Little Carpathians, between the villages of Čachtice and Višňové. What you reach at the top is a ruin, but a legible one. The buildings still step upwards in three clear stages, the lower, middle and upper castle, so the climb through them works as a slow reading of how the place was meant to be defended. From the highest walls the view opens across the slopes of the Little Carpathians, the scattered hillside settlements of the Myjava Hills and the ridge of Považský Inovec.
