Cerkiew Opieki Matki Bożej na Świętej Górze Jawor
Slovakia
The church sits on the northern slope of Jawor, above the spa village of Wysowa-Zdrój, and the first thing to understand is that it was built because people kept coming. On 21 September 1925 a woman from Wysowa reported seeing the Virgin Mary, and further apparitions followed on a clearing below the hill. Word spread quickly through the surrounding villages, and the crowds of pilgrims grew. The Greek Catholic bishop of Przemyśl was reluctant at first, but in the end he ordered a church to be raised on the spot. You are standing, in other words, where a devotion began, rather than at a church that later acquired one.
