Dům pánů z Lipé
Czechia
Look up at number 17 on Brno's náměstí Svobody and you are reading a name that does not quite belong. The Dům pánů z Lipé, the House of the Lords of Lipá, was built as the Schwanz palace and was later known as the Komarek house. The Lipá family did own an earlier Gothic house on this plot, and in 1564 it belonged to the Moravian provincial governor Čeněk of Lipá, but their line has nothing to do with the Renaissance building in front of you. The label only stuck after Czechoslovakia was founded, apparently out of anti-Austrian feeling: a Czech noble name was preferable to a German merchant's.
