ehem. Zisterzienserabtei Neuberg an der Mürz
Austria
Before you go in, stand back from the west front and look up. The church is built of squared limestone blocks, its walls heavy and plain, divided on all four sides by buttresses that step back four times and end in pinnacles. On this three-storey façade you find a blind arch, a high-Gothic rose window and a pointed portal whose tympanum is empty. Above the rose sits a console that is also empty. Until the 17th century it held the Neuberg Madonna, a life-size sandstone statue, until a hurricane-force storm blew it to the ground. It survived the fall undamaged. Around the portal you can still make out traces of a porch taken down in the 19th century.
