Evanjelický a. v. kostol

Slovakia

Leštiny is a small village about seven kilometres from Dolný Kubín, set in a valley between the Choč Hills and the Orava Highlands, and its wooden church does not try to announce itself. That reticence was the law. The church is one of the so-called articular churches, named after the articles agreed at the diet of Sopron in 1681, which granted Protestants limited freedoms. Articles 25 and 26 allowed new Protestant churches only on strict terms: built within a year, of wood alone, without a single nail and without foundations, in an out-of-the-way spot, with no tower and no bell, looking more like a dwelling than a church, and with an entrance that did not face the street directly. Only five such churches survive in Slovakia today: Leštiny, Istebné, Kežmarok, Hronsek and Svätý Kríž.
