Festenburg sits on a spur of rock that falls away steeply on three sides, in the village of the same name within the municipality of Sankt Lorenzen am Wechsel, in the Wechselland of eastern Styria. That geography explains almost everything about it. A castle was founded here around 1200, probably by the lords of Stubenberg, though the source is careful to say only that this is likely. The name it first carries in writing is Vöstenburg, and that record dates from 1353, so roughly a century and a half of its early life is inference rather than document.
