hospitál Kuks
Czechia
You arrive at the edge of a rise above the right bank of the Elbe, and the first thing that meets you is not a door but a terrace. Along its wall stand Matyáš Bernard Braun's allegories: on one side, behind the Angel of Blessed Death, the Virtues (Faith, Hope, Love, Patience, Wisdom, Courage, Chastity, Diligence, Generosity, Sincerity, Justice); on the other, behind the Angel of Mournful Death, the Vices (Pride, Avarice, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, Despair, Recklessness, Slander, Cunning). Religion stands on the projecting centre before the church, with eight Beatitudes along the balustrade. What you see outdoors are copies. The sandstone originals were moved indoors during the late twentieth century to a lapidarium made from the former hospital hall, and you can meet them there face to face.
