Jablunkovské šance
Czechia
What you walk across at Mosty u Jablunkova is the heart of a much longer idea. The Jablunkov Šance were a belt of fortifications built along the Silesian border against the Turks, and the main stronghold, the Great Šance, stood here by the Jablunkov Pass in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. Smaller works were scattered at Bukovec, Hrčava, Javořinka, Svrčinovec, where they were known as the Alte Schanze or Old Šance, and Čierne, where they went by the names Hayducké or Hrnčiarské šance. Standing on the old ramparts, you are at one knot in a defensive line that once stretched across the hills around you.
