Kalvária
Slovakia
Kalvária sits on a low hill, 265 metres above sea level, on the western edge of Prešov, and the first thing to grasp is that it is not one building but a whole hillside of them. A Baroque church, the Church of the Holy Cross, is surrounded by fourteen chapels of the Way of the Cross, a separate chapel of the Holy Stairs, catacombs and an adjoining cemetery. It was once considered the second most beautiful calvary in the Kingdom of Hungary, ranked only behind the one at Banská Štiavnica. Approach from the town and look for the long wall of the catacombs: seen from below, it gives the impression of fortifications, as though the hill were defended rather than devout.
