Kartause Mauerbach
Austria
Kartause Mauerbach is a former Carthusian monastery in the market town of Mauerbach, close to Vienna in Lower Austria, and it counts among the most important Baroque charterhouses in the country. The figure to hold on to is the cloister: square, almost 500 metres long, and one of the longest in Europe. Walk it and you pass the line of houses where the monks once lived, built onto its north, east and south-east sides. The complex now belongs to the Republic of Austria and serves the Federal Monuments Office, the Bundesdenkmalamt, as an information and training centre. The charterhouse and its exhibitions can be visited at weekends in summer, so plan around that.
