Kaštieľ Betliar
Slovakia
Betliar sits seven kilometres north of the district town of Rožňava, and the manor at its heart is counted the most visited in south-eastern Slovakia. What you walk towards today looks like a French hunting lodge, steep-roofed and theatrical, but that silhouette is the last layer of several. Underneath it, quite literally, lie the foundations of an older Renaissance castle that belonged to the Bebek family, and the house you see grew upwards and outwards from that base over more than a century and a half.
