Kaštieľ v Bytči
Slovakia
Stand in the centre of Bytča and the manor reads first as a fortress. It is a four-winged palace built around an arcaded courtyard, with a six-storey entrance tower in the north wing and massive round bastions at the corners. Before it there was a smaller castle, a residential tower with a courtyard, built in the 13th century and belonging to the bishopric of Nitra. Owners came and went, the Pongrác and Podmanický families among them, until František I. Turzo bought the Bytča estate in 1563. He belonged to a family that made its fortune mining and producing copper, and between 1571 and 1574 he had the old Gothic castle replaced with a fortified manor complex. The older tower survives only in historical engravings.
