Klášter Plasy
Czechia
Start with the ground beneath you, because that is where Plasy keeps its strangest secret. This former Cistercian monastery, in the town of Plasy in the Plzeň-North district, was raised on the site of a marsh in the floodplain of the river Střela. The convent does not rest on rock. It stands on oak foundations, and those timbers have survived because they lie below the water level of the valley floor, kept from rotting by the very wetness that made the site so unpromising. The great Baroque buildings around you depend, quite literally, on the river staying where it is.
