Klášterní Hradisko

Czechia

Klášterní Hradisko is not a ruin, a museum or a working monastery. It is a military hospital, and has been since 1802, which means you approach one of the grandest Baroque complexes in Moravia past people who are here for treatment rather than art. The former Premonstratensian monastery sits on a low rocky hill just north of Olomouc, across the River Morava from the old castle. The building is nearly square, roughly 100 by 115 metres, with four wings and a tower at each corner, and the whole complex covers more than a hectare. It has been a national cultural monument since 1995, but it opens to the public only on designated days, so check before you set out.
