Klementinum
Czechia
Walk a few steps from the Old Town end of Charles Bridge and you are already beside it: a sprawling complex of Baroque buildings that, after Prague Castle, is the second-largest architectural ensemble in the city. This is the Klementinum, once a Jesuit college and now the seat of the National Library of the Czech Republic, which looks after the whole site apart from its churches. It is listed among the country's national cultural monuments. It also keeps one quietly astonishing record. Weather observations began here in the middle of the eighteenth century and have been systematically written down since 1775, making them the longest continuous series of observations in central Europe. Every day's sky over these roofs has its line in the ledger.
