Kloster Pernegg
Austria
You reach Kloster Pernegg through a ring of walls that took three centuries to complete. The enclosure dates from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, and in places round towers topped with battlements stiffen the line, so the first impression is closer to a small fortress than a cloister. Inside, the former convent buildings sit to the south and west of the church, which rises above them all. Today this is one of Austria's best-known fasting centres, run under the name "Die Entdeckung der Stille", the discovery of silence. It is worth knowing, as you walk in, that the quiet here has been interrupted many times.
