Kutná Hora has two old parish churches that belong to its earliest layer, and this is the one people once simply called the Lower Church. Its upper counterpart is St James's, and you can see the family resemblance: the same Bohemian Gothic ambition, rendered here in a much plainer form. It stands in the eastern part of the town, outside the old fortifications, and it was probably founded before 1357 on the site of an earlier miners' chapel, though the first written records only appear at the start of the fifteenth century. So treat that founding date as likely rather than certain. The name has its own story, and it is a legend rather than history: silver ore that tumbled off traders' tables at a nearby market, 'nameted' or swept up from the ground, was said to have paid for the building. Later, the Flašary, Rousy and Zahrady mines contributed from their output.
