kostel sv. Anny

Czechia

Stand in front of the Church of St Anne in Sedlec, on the edge of Karlovy Vary, and the first thing that strikes you is its size. This is a large pilgrimage church, a single-nave building on a rectangular plan, raised between 1738 and 1747 by the builder Johann Schmied of Útvina. He worked from a simplified, reworked version of a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The scale makes more sense once you know that in 1750 only 250 people lived in Sedlec. The church was never meant for the village alone. It was built to hold all the processions that came here for the feast of St Anne.
