Kostel sv. Gotharda
Czechia
Stand at the lower end of Vinařická street and the Church of St Gothard fills the view, the dominant feature of Slaný's historic core and the town's most important Gothic sacred building. Its beginnings are less certain than its bulk suggests. Benedictine monks from the Ostrov monastery founded it at some point in the 12th century, and the dedication itself points back to them, since St Gothard had served as abbot of their mother house at Niederaltaich. A chronicle by a Vyšehrad canon records, under 1137, a woman miraculously healed through the saint's intercession and a church built in his honour. The chronicler places it at Slapy, which some historians read as a mix-up with Slaný, yet Slaný does not appear in the monastery's property list for that period. So the founding date stays open. What is certain is that a Romanesque basilica with three aisles stood here before the century ended.
