Kostel sv. Voršily

Czechia

You find the Church of St Ursula not down a quiet lane but on Národní třída itself, at number 139/8, in the middle of Prague's New Town. It is a High Baroque, single-nave church that belongs to the convent and school of the Ursuline sisters, and together with the convent it is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The same address also houses an endocrinology institute and an Italian delicatessen called Aggeo, a reminder that this is a working city block. Before you go in, look at the sandstone group of St John of Nepomuk in front, with two small angels holding cartouches that bear his attributes, a monstrance and the Palladium of Stará Boleslav. Ignác František Platzer carved it in 1746–1747 to crown a fountain designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The fountain itself had to make way for street traffic at the end of the 19th century.
