Kostel svatého Mikuláše

Czechia

The Church of St Nicholas in Nýdek, in the Frýdek-Místek district, is a wooden church, and its founding is recorded in its own words. A founding text kept from the church, written in old Czech with a spelling all its own, says the building was raised in 1576 'to the honour and glory of the name of the Lord God Almighty' at the expense of the neighbours and people of the village. You are looking at something a community paid for itself, not a gift handed down from a lord or a distant bishop.
