Kostel svatého Štěpána

Czechia

Kostel svatého Štěpána stands on Štěpánská street in Prague's New Town, and it is as old as the district itself. Charles IV founded it in the middle of the 14th century at the same moment he founded the New Town, as the parish church for its upper part; St Henry's served the lower part. At first it was run by the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, the order from whom Charles had acquired most of the land for his new town. Building ran from 1351 to 1401, under a master builder recorded simply as Master Jiří, and the Gothic church rose beside an older Romanesque rotunda of St Stephen, which was rededicated to St Longinus once the new church took Stephen's name.
