Kostol Božského Srdca Ježišovho
Slovakia
Stand in the big central square of Partizánske and the church is the thing your eye keeps returning to. That is by design. The town began life as Baťovany, built quite literally on a green field by the Baťa shoe company, and the architect Vladimír Karfík laid it out as an ideal town joining zones for work, housing and leisure. The square was part park, part paving, ringed by the social house, the town hall and the department store. What it lacked was a focal point. In July 1942 it was decided that the town would have a Roman Catholic church, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with Karfík again as its designer and Baťa's own firm as builder. It remains the town's best-known landmark.
