Kostol sv. Mikuláša

Slovakia

Kostol svätého Mikuláša is the Roman Catholic parish church of Tomášov, a village in the Senec district that belongs to the Archdiocese of Bratislava. Before you go in, look up at the tower. On its upper floors you will see keyhole-shaped loopholes, the kind of openings made for firing through, and they are the clearest sign that this building was meant to defend as well as to pray. Archbishop Szelepcsényi had it built in 1674 in the early Baroque style, on the site of an older structure, and the stone came from a church at Malinovo that floods had destroyed. So the walls in front of you are, quite literally, a neighbouring village's ruin put back to use.
