Landeszeughaus
Austria
Picture five storeys of stored war stacked on top of one another, and you have the Landeszeughaus in Graz. It was once the central weapons depot of Styria, and its arms equipped the Styrian provincial levy and supplied the Military Frontier set up in the sixteenth century, in what are now Croatia and Hungary, to hold back the Ottoman Empire. With around 32,000 objects, it is described as the largest armoury in the world, and, unusually, one preserved largely in its original state. You are not walking through a curated selection so much as through the stockroom itself.
