Mariánský sloup
Czechia
Stand on Dolní náměstí, Olomouc's Lower Square, and look up. At the top of this Baroque plague column is the Virgin Mary as the Immaculata, raised high above the square. The column was built by Václav Render between 1715 and 1723, an act of thanks from the townspeople of Olomouc for the end of a plague that struck Moravia from 1714 to 1716. There is a small puzzle in those dates: building work is recorded as starting in 1715, while the plague is said to have lasted into 1716. The source does not explain the overlap, so it is fair to wonder whether the column began as a plea and was finished as a thank-offering.
