Mariendom

Austria

Look up at the single tower on Domplatz and you are looking at a famous near miss. It reaches 134.8 metres, or, by a fresh survey in 2018, 134.69 metres from ground level and 133.53 metres from the floor inside. Either way it stops about two metres short of the Stephansdom in Vienna. A widely repeated story says the original, taller design was refused because no building in Austria-Hungary could rise above the Stephansdom's south tower. The story is popular but unproven, so enjoy it as a legend rather than a fact. What is not in doubt is that this is Austria's largest church by capacity, though not its tallest.
