Matka Boží před Týnem
Czechia
Stand in the Old Town Square and look east, and the two towers of Týn rise above everything else, each reaching 80 metres. What you do not see is the church's front door. The western portal is masked by two houses built out in front of it, one of them the Týn School, so you reach the church through a passage rather than across open ground. The dark, bare stone that makes the façade so recognisable is not how it was meant to look: during purist alterations in the second half of the 19th century, the plaster covering part of the façade was stripped away. The builders worked mostly in sandstone for details and for reinforcing the buttresses, and in softer opuka, a local marlstone, as rubble for the infill walls.
