Mautturm
Austria
The tower sits on a slope about 20 metres above the Danube, wedged between two houses in the western part of Sarmingstein, with the B3 Donaustraße running right past its foot. It is easy to drive by without noticing. Stop, though, because what you are looking at is counted among the last surviving medieval toll towers on the Danube, and it once watched over two roads at once: the riverside route, formerly known as the Hauderer-Straße, and the river itself. Anyone moving along this stretch of the Strudengau, by cart or by boat, passed under its gaze and paid.
