Mauzóleum Chatama Sofera

Slovakia

You approach along the Danube embankment, the nábrežie L. Svobodu, and at first there is very little to see: a low mound, a scatter of glass stelae standing up out of it, a black concrete box. Everything that matters here is underneath you. This is the tomb of Chatam Sofer, who lived from 1762 to 1839, served as rabbi of the Bratislava Jewish community and stood for traditional Jewish learning in the city. For Jews it is a place of pilgrimage, and his worldwide significance brings visitors here from all over the world. The memorial in its present form opened in 2002, timed for the 240th anniversary of his birth, and it has been nominated for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
